Step-by-Step Process
The video above shows the full process without narration — watch at your own pace and pause whenever you need. Here’s a quick overview:
1. Print and cut the pattern
Print the PDF at actual size and cut out all pieces. Transfer them to your leather and cut carefully.
2. Prepare the edges
Bevel and burnish all edges that will remain visible after assembly. Much easier to do now than later.
3. Attach the zip
Glue the zip to the top edge of the main panel. Stitch in place with a 5 mm pricking iron and saddle stitch.
4. Assemble the body
Glue the front and back panels together around the perimeter. Punch holes and saddle stitch all the way around.
5. Finish the edges
Burnish all outer edges. Turn the purse right-side out if lined, or leave as-is for a clean raw look.
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
One of the most beautiful things about leathercraft is that there are no strict rules when it comes to creativity. A coin purse is the ideal canvas to let your imagination run free.
Try a bold, textured leather you’ve been hesitant to use. Mix two contrasting colours for the front and back panels. Swap the standard zip pull for something unexpected — a vintage charm, a tassel, a ring. Add a hand-stamped monogram or a blind emboss on the front panel.
The pattern stays the same — but every piece you make can tell a completely different story. That’s how you find your style. That’s how you find your customer. Not by playing it safe, but by making the thing that excites you — because that energy always shows in the finished piece.
Make ten coin purses. Make them all different. See which one people reach for first.
